2025 - "Reconstructing the Lives of a Mudéjar-Islamic Community in Medieval Spain: A Bioarchaeological Investigation," Conference Presentation, by Patxi Pérez Ramallo
Between 2019 and 2021, over 300 Islamic tombs were discovered at Torre Monreal in Tudela (Navarre, Spain), the largest Maqbara found in the medieval Kingdom of Navarre. These burials belong to the Mudéjars, Muslims living under Christian rule after the 12th-century conquest. This study integrates osteology, stable isotopes, radiocarbon dating, and aDNA research to reconstruct biological profiles, health, genetic origins, and diet. Comparing them with Christians, we explore their transformations until their disappearance in the early 16th century. As the first large-scale bioarchaeological study of a Muslim minority in Iberia, this research offers groundbreaking insights into their lives and legacy.
Patxi will present his research at The European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) Annual Meeting in Belgrade, Serbia. He is a postdoctoral researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).
