2023 - Dukan Ottoman Fort: Survey and Excavation
This project, led by Professor Andrew Peterson, worked to survey, excavate, and record an important Ottoman fortress in Iraqi Kurdistan. The project carried out a detailed architectural survey with selective excavation.
The Ottoman era was an important one for Iraq, forming its modern borders and several major cities. Yet little is known of its archaeology. This project used the fort, towering over the Lesser Zab river, as a case study to demystify Ottoman rule and how it was expressed in the region.
The study took particular interest in ordinary people. It paid close attention to ceramic finds, building up an idea of the garrison that lived there, what their lifestyles were like, who they traded with, and how they connected with the local population.
