2024 - In Situ: Specialised Training on Archaeology in Rural Jerusalem, by RIWAQ

As heritage sites in Palestine face intensifying threats due to conflict, urban development, and neglect, RIWAQ’s In Situ training project seeks to empower a new generation of Palestinian heritage professionals. Based in the historic village of Qalandiya, near Jerusalem, this program offers in-depth, hands-on archaeological training to at least 30 architects, engineers, archaeologists, and conservators.

Participants will learn archaeological field techniques, conservation strategies, and heritage documentation methods, all while working directly on threatened sites. The program also prioritizes community engagement, ensuring that local voices and traditions are integral to heritage protection.

RIWAQ is one of Palestine’s most respected heritage organizations, known for its award-winning work in conserving historic buildings and urban environments. Through this project, supported by The Barakat Trust, RIWAQ aims to bolster Palestinian capacities to safeguard cultural heritage under increasingly difficult conditions, especially in rural areas around Jerusalem.
