2024 - Postgrad Award: Mohammad Abdelkarim
Mohammad Abdelkarim’s project examines the intersections between activism, collective memory, and contemporary Egyptian art, with a focus on how performance and ephemeral practices can be documented and preserved. As an artist, researcher, and performer, Abdelkarim has long engaged with questions of memory and heritage in the contemporary Middle Eastern context.
With The Barakat Trust’s support, he will create a new body of work that engages with underrepresented archives and forgotten artistic narratives in Egypt. His project will produce both an academic study and a creative output, highlighting the importance of ephemeral art practices in preserving cultural memory, particularly during times of political transition.
Mohammad Abdelkarim is affiliated with Sandberg Institute (Rietveld Academy) in the Netherlands and works across art, performance, and critical theory. This project will contribute to a growing discourse on how contemporary art can serve as a tool for archiving and interpreting recent histories in the Islamic world.
