2024 - Postgraduate Award: Negar Kazemipour

Negar Kazemipour’s doctoral research, supported by The Barakat Trust, investigates the residential architecture of Tabriz during the Qajar era (18th–early 20th centuries), a period marked by significant political and cultural shifts. These historic houses, many of which are under threat due to urban expansion and neglect, embody a rich architectural language that reflects both the social structure and artistic identity of the region.

Negar’s project will produce a comprehensive documentation of these buildings, focusing on their spatial organization, decorative elements, and adaptive transformations over time. By analyzing these domestic spaces, she aims to reconstruct the lived experiences of their inhabitants and the cultural values embedded in architectural form.

Currently based at Medeniyet University in Istanbul, Negar’s research will not only fill an important gap in Iranian architectural history but also contribute to heritage conservation efforts in Tabriz. The Barakat Trust’s support enables her to conduct vital fieldwork and produce a resource valuable to scholars, architects, and preservationists alike.
