2023 - The Epigraphy of Kashmir
This project, carried out by Dr Sameer Hamdani, documented and studied the rich but rapidly disappearing array of epigraphy, carved onto the stone of Kashmir in Arabic and Persian throughout the 14th-18th centuries.
As Kashmir grew as a crossroads of cultures, its sultans adopted the Perso-Islamic tradition of highlighting their sovereignty through public calligraphy, clearly viewable texts of historical, political, or spiritual importance.
These texts are peppered across the region’s mosques, mausolea, gardens, and other spots where the people might see them. But despite their intended prominence, they have gone largely ignored in scholarship, even in studies of sites where they’re found. Many are disappearing due to lack of adequate care.
