Since 2017, Dr Utrero Agudo has been a Tenured Researcher at the Escuela de Estudios Árabes (Granada), of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Spain.
His research is devoted to the archaeology and architecture of late antique and early medieval periods in the Iberian Peninsula and Western Europe (5thto 11thcenturies). He has directed and participated in several regional, national and international projects and in different research contracts, all of them with objects of study located in Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal and Tunisia. These frameworks have given him the chance to research constructions of different periods (from late antique to contemporary), types (ecclesiastical, domestic, industrial) and regions. All these activities have thus enabled him to contribute to the knowledge, restoration and preservation of a wide group of building heritage, including some examples declared World Heritage. His research has been published in 4 books, 4 editions and more than 50 chapters of books and articles in national and international journals.
From 2014, thanks to The Barakat Trust and the Spanish Ministry of Culture, he has directed, together with Giuseppe Mandalà, a project devoted to archaeological and documentary research of the Islamic and Norman site of San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi in Palermo, Italy.
