This tour will take you through the wonders of historic Cairo to see over a thousand years of Islamic architecture and culture.  Under the expert guidance of Seif El Rashidi, Director of The Barakat Trust and Agnieszka Dobrowolska, Director of The Sultan Foundation you will get exclusive access to sites and hear first-hand about projects they know well and champion.

The first day you will visit the famous Egyptian Museum, followed by a tranquil sail on the Nile in a felucca.  Visits to numerous magnificent monuments will follow, among them one of the greatest and oldest Islamic mosques – the Mosque of Ahmad ibn Tulun covering six and a half acres. Experience the hustle and bustle of “Street of Tentmakers” with Seif, author of The Tentmakers of Cairo and learn about the applique art known as khayamiya. Together with Agnieszka, you will explore the Maq’ad of Sultan Qaitbey, a cultural hub within Cairo, known as the City of the Dead. Part of this exquisite funerary complex has recently been adapted for a wide range of cultural activities for the inhabitants of the underprivileged neighbourhood.  Learn how a recent initiative, funded by venture philanthropy, is providing women who live there with a transformative source of income.

Dinner at private homes will introduce you to some of the country’s culinary traditions, delving into the special collections library at the American University will provide further historical background, while a visit to contemporary galleries will introduce you of the current art scene.

This is a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture and heritage of Cairo, under the guidance of local experts, who have a deep knowledge and passion for areas of Cairo that many travellers would find inaccessible.

Your home, while there will be the Sofitel Cairo, Nile El Gezirah Hotel, an urban oasis in the centre of Cairo. This luxury 5-star hotel on Gezira island is on the riverside.

Price

Price per person is £3,490 based on two people sharing for a group of 20 maximum. A single supplement is £735 per person. The price includes: Tour guide from arrival at the airport throughout the tour, Seven nights accommodation, meals (7 breakfast, 8 lunches, 7 dinners), welcome drink on Day 1, all transport in a luxury air-conditioned coach, all entry guide fees.

Not included:  flights for clients, travel insurance, meals not listed, incidental costs, such as laundry, alcoholic drinks with meals and visa fees.
