ASK THE EXPERT
This month, Glaire Anderson is our selected expert! Glaire is a specialist in Islamic visual culture with a focus on medieval Iberia and the age of the great caliphs (roughly 650-1250 CE), and a Senior Lecturer in Islamic Art at the University of Edinburgh. An advocate for using Islamic visual culture to reveal a more diverse and interconnected global history, she is dedicated to making the discipline widely accessible through the education, gaming, and GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) industries.
Her research has focused on the early Islamic West, gender and patronage, global connections between Islamic and non-Islamic societies, and digital tools for Islamic art history. Her first book explored the suburban villas of Córdoba during the reign of the Umayyad dynasty (756-1031 CE) and her second considers science and visual culture through the career of the ninth-century Cordoban polymath ‘Abbas Ibn Firnas, best known today for an experiment in early human flight.
